Hi, I’m Dani! I am a graduate student at VCU who is training for her second marathon: the Richmond Marathon!

This marathon is especially special to me because it was the race that inspired me to start running.

As a sophomore in undergrad, I was walking out of my dorm on my way to work when I was unexpectedly greeted by a sea of runners. My first thought was, “This is so cool!” At the time, I had no idea what was happening. Seeing thousands of people running through the streets of Richmond stuck with me.

Every year after that, I watched thousands of runners take on something that seemed almost impossible. From that point on, I told myself that one day I wanted to run this race.

The funny part? I didn’t even understand what a marathon was! Eventually, I learned that a marathon is a 26.2-mile race. At the time, I had no idea how much preparation, dedication, and mental strength went into running one.

Years later, here I am. I am training for the race that started it all.

This will be my second marathon, but it still feels just as exciting. Months of preparation have gone into getting physically ready. Along the way, I’ve also learned that marathon training is a mental challenge. Some days, I question why I signed up. Other days, my legs are tired and 26.2 miles feels VERY far away. Those are the moments when having a strong support system matters most.

That’s where my spectators come in!

I’m asking my friends and family to be more than spectators. You are my support system, cheer squad, fuel station, and reminder to keep going. Every cheer, snack, high-five, and encouraging word can make a difference.

So, welcome to my Richmond Marathon journey! Let’s make it one to remember!
